Vermont legalizes marriage for same-sex couples In April 2009' Vermont became the fourth state to recognize same-sex marriages when the Legislature voted to overturn the governor's veto of a gay marriage bill. While many in the state saw the change as a civil-rights victory' for some business owners' it was also a major economic opportunity. Businesses that cater to marriages are anticipating prosperous times as gay couples from across the country come to Vermont - already a popular wedding spot - to marry. Two women from Pennsylvania became the first gay couple to get married in Stowe' on Sept. 1' 2009' the day the new law went into effect. On Nov. 7' Aaron Woodard and Reginald Dunlap were married in a civil ceremony at the Green Mountain Inn in Stowe. |
